Charter Locations
Where in the world should I charter a crewed yacht? And When?
The choices are endless! And our knowledge is too.
Yates Yachts will help you choose a yacht charter destination based on firsthand experience. Sherry Yates, Charter Broker and owner, has sailed the islands of the Eastern Caribbean extensively. She has hiked the rainforest of Grenada and soaked in hot spring-fed waterfalls in Dominica. She crewed in the Rolex Regatta, the BVI Spring Regatta and the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. She has been diving in the Turks & Caicos and sailed the Coast of Sardinia. Sherry has visited the islands of Greece, and grew up sailing the New England coastline. Sherry has experienced 5-star service on luxury motor yachts, and can tell you what to expect on an extended passage.
Yates Yachts will work closely with you to insure the destination you choose fulfills your every expectation. We’ll assess your needs and make recommendations based on your charter party’s interests. From a romantic honeymoon to a reunion in paradise with your best friends, there’s a destination perfect for you.
Year Round in The Caribbean
The Caribbean offers chartering 12 months a year. The Caribbean is also the best value in a crewed yacht vacation. Many of the yachts offer all-inclusive rates. Easy to reach by air, there are many non-stop flights to the Caribbean. You can leave your house in the morning and be sailing on your private yacht charter the same afternoon.
The U.S. and British Virgin Islands
he U.S. and British Virgin Islands (BVI) offer superb sailing conditions. Here, you are never out of sight of land. You can visit 2-3 islands in a day! Our protected waters offer steady tradewinds, abundant sunshine, warm, inviting, gin-clear water, and smooth seas that rarely build to more than a chop.
In the USVI, St. Thomas is a mecca for duty-free shopping. The airport is serviced by American Airlines, United, U.S. Airways, Delta, and Spirit Air. If you plan to board your yacht in the BVI’s, you can take the passenger ferry for the 40-minute trip, or we can arrange for a private water taxi. Nearby St. John is 2/3 National Parkland with pristine beaches and a very laid-back atmosphere.
The magnificent British Virgin Islands have earned the title “Cruising Capital of the World”. Tortola is the largest island and the center of commerce and the BVI government. Your cruise will take you to many inhabited and uninhabited islands, including Jost Van Dyke, Norman Island, Peter Island, Salt Island, Cooper Island, Virgin Gorda, Marina Cay, Anegada, The Dogs, Beef Island, and Sandy Cay.
The visibility for diving and snorkeling is excellent. Our most famous divesite is the well-preserved Wreck of the Royal Mail Steamer Rhone which was sunk in a hurricane. She broke in two and lies in 25-85 feet of water. Another spectacular dive is the wreck of the Chikuzen. Other intriguing snorkeling and divesites include the Painted Walls, The Indians, Alice in Wonderland, Monkey Point, The Chimneys and Blonde Rock.
The BVI offer something for everyone. Spend the day on a secluded beach, or join fellow cruisers in search of the perfect “Painkiller” at one of the islands’ many beach bars. Swim, snorkel, take a spin on the waterskis or kneeboard or wakeboard, dive, sightsee, shop,…or simply relax on deck with a good book while your crew brings you a cool drink. The choice is yours!
The Leeward Islands
More spirited sailing awaits you in the Leeward Islands which include St. Maarten, Anguilla, St. Barthelemy (St. Barths), Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda, Guadeloupe, The Saints, and Dominica.
A wonderful week can be spent cruising the “Renaissance Islands” of St. Maarten, Anguilla and St. Barths. Visit the Dutch side of St. Maarten for duty-free shopping or a bit of gambling, then sail to the French side for chic boutiques along the quay in Marigot. Grand Case is the culinary Capital of the Caribbean, or sail up to Orient Beach where you can lose your tan lines!
Anguilla has miles of white sandy beaches and 5-star resorts. After a relaxing day, this little island comes alive at night.
St. Barths is one of our favorites. Fabulous beaches, outstanding dining and shopping. You don’t have to be rich & famous to enjoy this chic destination. Rent a motor scooter or ATV and tour the island, or stop into Le Select for a Cheeseburger in Paradise. You can dance until dawn, or listen to live music in a waterfront jazz cafe.
Antigua is rich in history. We recommend boarding your yacht in historic English Harbour. Enjoy circumnavigating the island with a 25 mile sail up to unspoiled Barbuda for superb snorkeling and a visit to the frigate bird rookery. Antigua is THE place to see some of the most beautiful yachts in the World, especially during the Classic Yacht Regatta in the Spring. Immediately following the Regatta is Antigua Race Week. Even if you don’t race, it’s a fabulous week for spectating and enjoying the parties.
The lush island of Dominica is a mecca for hikers and eco tourism. With one river for every day of the year, Dominica features dramatic waterfalls, 8 volcanoes, boiling lakes, natural hot springs and spectacular scenery.
Further south is Guadeloupe. Visit the Cousteau Underwater Park off Pigeon Island, or sail into the Pointe a Pitre and visit the colorful markets in a Creole atmosphere. Just 10 miles south of Guadeloupe lie the charming group of islands known as Isles Des Saintes.
The Windward Islands
Another favorite place to charter, the four main islands of Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenada are very lush, while The Grenadines offer a host of smaller, drier islands with perfect beaches, crystal clear water, and colorful reefs.
Staring at the top of this island chain is French Martinique, the largest of the Windward Islands. Charming St. Pierre lies at the foot of Mt. Pelee volcano. The story of the eruption that killed all 30,000 residents in 1902 (except for one very lucky prisoner in the local jail) is legendary. Our trips to the bustling City of Fort de France were always a gastronomic feast. Start your journey down the Rue Victor Hugo and don’t forget to stop for a fresh croissant or refreshing chilled glass of white wine. C’est magnifique!
St. Lucia has many surprises, including the spectacularly beautiful and elusive bay in Marigot. So well hidden, a British Admiral is said to have hidden his fleet here from the pursing French. The crews tied palm fronds in the rigging. From the sea, his looked like just another empty inlet! But the most spectacular sight is sailing south to the towering Pitons, 2 mountains rising up from the sea. Visit the nearby hot springs, or take a taxi into the hills to enjoy the views with a sunset punch in hand.
Certainly the most popular place to charter in the Windwards is THE GRENADINES! Board your crewed yacht charter in St. Vincent and sail south for Bequia, chic Mustique, Canouan, the gorgeous Tobago Cays, Union and Palm Islands, Petit St. Vincent and Petit Martinique. Caribbean yacht charters in the Windwards are magical. If you have the time, charter your yacht for 10 days, and end your journey in Grenada, the Spice Island.
Summer & Fall in New England
Start your charter yacht vacation in Newport, Rhode Island. Take in the Jazz Festival, or tour the historic mansions where the Vanderbilts played.
Board your private crewed yacht charter as your Captain sets course for Martha’s Vineyard. You can play a round of golf or eat freshly caught lobster. Tour Nantucket Island on a bicycle. Discover Cape Cod. Whale watch. See the brilliant Fall foliage. Cruise the Maine coastline and enjoy a real New England Clambake.
